Artist, Historian Sam Kates "Painterly Realism" Opens Friday, June 5th, Rain or Shine!

Sam Kates' detailed, extraordinary paintings of working boats and shorelines will be featured the First Friday of June. Florida born and bred, Mr. Kates scenes of shrimp boat fleets, lighthouses, sawgrass and pine, are composed on site. With a mastery of rendering light and shadow, his paintings achieve a detailed poignancy and reflect the artists' remembrance of his childhood in New Smyrna Beach and trips to Cedar Key.

Artist Masato Nagakane will show his new vibrantly colored canvases through the month of May at Butterfield's.
Influenced by seaside culture and his Panamanian-Japanese heritage, Masato's paintings vibrate with his colorful pallet and soulful renderings of faces and figures. Come join us for First Friday festivities and share the light and spirit of Masato's paintings.

Ten Years of Butterfield Artists! Anniversary Show Friday, Feb. 6

All during February the gallery will be celebrating ten years of being the center of the St. Augustine art scene! Artists who have been members over the years will gather together for an alumni show. The large back room of the gallery will be chock-a-block with newly created works, all in a 12" x 12" format by almost every artist who has graced the walls of the gallery over the last 10 years.

Butterfield remains dedicated to being at the forefront of St. Augustine's galleries, showing the best of our local artist's work!

New Gallery Next door to Butterfield!!!

The space formerly occupied by Energy Lab has been reconfigured, repainted, and renewed. Butterfield II is newly opened with beautiful, fresh paintings and sculptures by local artists. A space has been dedicated to educational use and classes taught by professional artists will soon be offered. Watch this blog for more information.

Butterfield Garage Art Gallery was at the heart of St. Augustine's Art Walk this month. Standing room only! - - the whole town came out for a little culture and to support the Breast Cancer Research Fund.
Butterfield artist Jesse Britten set up his easel and drew beautiful pencil portraits of anyone who chose to sit for him.
And Marjorie McKenna Brown, a breast cancer survivor, was on hand to sign copies of her new memoir "Bits and Pieces of a Fallen Catholic."

Leslie Giles Featured Artist Opens Friday, Sept. 5th

A London-based artist who is currently working in her studio near Daytona Beach, Leslie Giles' bright oil paintings will be gracing the walls at the Butterfield gallery the month of September.
Ms. Giles reinterprets the common-place landscape of shopping strips, gas stations and beach motels into bright graphic statements of saturated color, evoking the bright Florida sun reflecting off concrete and ocean, casting deep shadows.

"Courtyard Retreat"
Created in her studio overlooking a garden courtyard in St. Augustine, Mary Lou Gibson's recent paintings grace the walls at our gallery. Ms. Gibson uses intense, saturated color, often with strong vertical and horizontal compositional structure, eliciting an emotional response from the viewer. Her esthetic language consists of improvisational application of paint and repeated use of scratched line elements and gentle dollops of color, emphasizing the painting process, creating atmosphere and soulfulness.

A few brave, intrepid souls with umbrellas and rubber boots came out to the First Friday scene at the galleries. So few souls that here at Butterfield we had gallons of fine wine left over, as well as a body bag full of trail mix.
Now that beautiful, sunny Florida springtime is here, we hope you come by the gallery to see paintings by this month's featured artist, Stephanie Shieldhouse.
